Duo Duo
I don't know if my family, especially on my Papa's side, have ever regretted to have me. My Mama is the one who doesn't want any child from the beginning, but my father and his parents insisted on having one, because my father is already the only son of my grandparents. Then there I came.
When I was 6 months old, my Papa took me to see his parents who lived in West China, a thousand kilometers away from my home in the city of Xi'An. Grandpa was so excited that he persuaded grandma to do a big cleaning with him in their flat. He climbed up a tall chair to clean the windows, humming old songs. When he lifted his left arm, something suddenly stuck the veins in his head. He couldn't move the right half of his body any more. Papa took his parents to live with us so that he and Mama could look after them. He also found a baby sitter to look after me, that was Duo Duo.
Duo Duo is one of our distant relatives who live in the countryside four to five hours by bus from my home. Her grandpa is the elder brother of my grandpa. Years ago when they were young, my grandpa joined Chairman Mao's army and left his hometown. Duo Duo's grandpa, as the village leader, chose to live in the countryside till he passed away. His sons still live there, leading a hard life, no one is village leader any more.
Duo Duo was 15 years old when she came to my home. She is the eldest daughter of her parents. Like all the peasants in China, her parents wanted sons. After giving birth to three girls, they finally got a boy, who is only several months older than me.
Duo Duo's full name is Li Duo qin. Her first sister's name is Li Duo fen, second sister Li Duo hui and the boy's name is Li Duo wei. Duo Duo's sisters' and brother's nick names are Fen Fen, Hui Hui and Wei Wei, only her nick name is Duo Duo, which could either mean abundant or redundant.
I have never seen Duo Duo's sisters. They had only come to my home once, which was when Duo Duo came for the first time. Mama said it was "the younger, the better" in Duo Duo's family. Duo Duo was the most ugly and dumb one while her little brother was the prettiest and cleverest among the four. Papa said he was a little regretted that he had told his cousin to send this daughter to my home.
However, Duo Duo proved to be a good baby-sitter. In spite of those a few times in the beginning she fell me onto the ground or made my head hit on the desk by accident, she soon familiarized her job in my family. As long as I have memory, she was liked by everyone in our family. Mama and Papa thought Duo Duo was honesty. Grandma helped Duo Duo to correct her accent to Mandarin and taught her to read newspapers in her spare time. She said Duo Duo was a diligent student, though she learned slow.
Duo Duo's education only reaches the end of primary school. Her Papa said "This is enough for a peasant woman." He had four children with a tiny income. He needed to take care on how to use the money properly. So Duo Duo stayed at home and helped her parents with some farm work. When Duo Duo's sisters went to middle school one after another, she wept before her parents. "You have no one to blame," Her Papa said, "The money goes to who's got a gift." Duo Duo just wept hard. She didn't do well in school at all. " Don't cry. It's ok, Duo Duo." Her mother said while milking the new born baby." For us women, the most important thing is to marry a good man. Look at Mama, when I went to primary school, we didn't read books, we did labour work. In those days when Chairman Mao lived, labour was the best thing ever. Nobody wanted to read books. Now I still live a good life. Look at your little brother, how cute he is !"
On the days I didn't want to go to school, I told what Duo Duo's mother said to my grandma. She shook her head and said "It's nonsense." Then she grab my schoolbag,"Here, take it, study good in class!"
Grandma didn't like Chairman Mao. She was once a daughter of the richest rice shopper in Luo Yang City. Her father's rice shops spread all over Henan Province. His small wives (not the biggest one with formal wedding) were almost the same amount as his rice shops. My grandma was born by one of the small wives. Then the war came. Chairman Mao called on all the poor people to fight against rich people for equal. When Kuomindang, the party said to represent for the rich, was about to loose, grandma's father ran to Tai Wan like most of the rich people at that time. He only took several boxes of pure gold and his newest wife with him. Some of his children who married rich businessmen or rich officers also went there. My grandma was in the university in Xi' An City. She didn't even know when her father left. Fortunately my grandpa, the local officer, fell in love with her secretly . He knew the changes in her family and asked her if she would rely on him and let him look after her. Then they got married.
At first grandma was always thinking about going to Taiwan to be with her family. As a daughter of the rich rice shopper, grandma didn't know how to cook when she got married. Grandpa took his mother to live with them. They two cooked for grandma all the time.In 1960, the middle of the three year famine, my grand parents moved to West China with the army. Grandma was pregnant on the way. In the first few days they were lucky because the army quartered at the bank of a seasonal river. Grandpa could get three small fish from the army everyday and his mother often went to the mountains nearby to find some edible plants as vegetables. Grandpa's mother couldn't cook fish. She had never ate any fish in the countryside. She said those big eyes scared her. My grandma decided to learn to cook fish herself. And she succeeded. But her mother in law never took a taste. She said she couldn't bear the smell. She'd rather eat potatoes and what she could find in the mountains.
Soon the lake disappeared, so did the fish. Grandpa and his mother fed grandma anything they could find, grasses, skin of trees and finally some mud. Every night they were hungry like wolves but still had to see grandma throwing up everything she had eaten.
My Papa was born a fat baby weighing over 4 kilograms. After several months of body edema, his grandma finally starved to death with the other 15 million Chinese people.
My grandma taught Papa to read books by herself, ignoring Chairman Mao's propagandas. Time proves that she was right. After 1978, the government took the "Reform and Opening up" policy. Knowledge became important once more. My Papa took the first new college exam and went to the university grandma used to study in. After graduation he went to the government-running factory and soon became one of the youngest leaders.
Papa said a lot of young girls were chasing him but grandma wrote in the letter that he must find someone who was able to cook delicious meals. Papa smiled in his heart because he knew it wouldn't be a problem for Mama, whose father was a cook.
Mama was actually from the south, where fish is people's main food. The dishes in my grandpa's (on my mother's side) restaurant were over 50 kinds. Those dishes brought a lot of money to grandpa. Every month he sent part of this money to Mama from the south, soon it became dresses, shoes, hats and bags. Mama was pretty and fashionable. She had not only the ability to lead the fashion of the present, but the ability to foresee the trends in the future. In China of 1980's when most people were skinny and thinking chubby is a symbol of wealth, Mama devoted herself into loosing weight. Papa knew her from the university. She didn't like him at first, because he was fat. Papa was fat since he was born, so he asked Mama if she could give him some tips on loosing weight.
When Papa lost 20 kilograms, he married Mama. My grandma was heartbroken to see her son so skinny at the wedding, but the dishes my Mama cooked was so delicious that she couldn't pick anything on her. Grandma had only to tell herself that Papa would soon be fat again eating these everyday.
Papa did became fat soon, but it was not because of Mama's cooking. Mama didn't cook at all, though she did inherit the gift of cooking from her father. If she cooked, she cooked great, but she never liked cooking. She likes being pretty. Cooking will make her face yellow with oil and her body full of the oily smell. Everyday she asked my father to eat outside and she just boiled some vegetables for food. She said it's healthy as well as easy.
When my grand parents came to live with us, Mama still ate this way. She never ate the food Duo Duo cooked or bought outside. It was only when grandma cooked Papa's favourite fish dishes that Mama would manage to eat some concerning Papa's sensibilities. Like being fat since birth, Papa loved eating fish from he was a child, especially those fish grandma cooked. He didn't allow any body to dislike those fish. Duo Duo didn't eat fish when she first came my home. "It's staring at me!"Many times when we were eating fish, grandma would point to the fish eyes with chopsticks, imitating Duo Duo with her countryside accident. Duo Duo just gave a big smile when we laugh. When I started to remember things, Duo Duo loved eating fish. She often helped grandma with cooking the fish.
Although Duo Duo had an accent, it was not so strong as the way grandma imitated. Grandma's accent was just like Duo Duo's Papa's. He came to our home twice a year. Every time he came, he brought some apples or potatoes from his farmland. The latest time he came with Wei Wei, the little brother of Duo Duo. He was good looking. He had dark eyebrows with double-fold eyes, in a pretty pink face just like my dolls. If he didn't smear his nose water on my bed, or if he didn't put my big stuffed Baby Rabbit on the ground and ride on her like ride a horse, I would have liked him. Mama picked up some of my old toys to give him. Duo Duo pushed his head lower to let him say "Thank you."

After Duo Duo's Papa left, grandma said: " Duo Duo, your Papa is looking for a boyfriend for you. Do you want a boyfriend?"
Duo Duo said nothing but smiled, her face was red like a tomato.
Grandpa was sick, while I was too young, Duo Duo had so much work to do that she seldom went home. Duo duo said there were a lot of apple trees and grape trees in her village. Every family raised bulls and chicken. In spring there were flowers and many many butterflies in the field. It sounded like a wonderland to me. So I told Mama I wanted to go to Duo Duo's home. "What's interesting about that!"Mama screamed,"There are nothing but mud and fleas!" That was just Mama. Sometimes she was like a fairy in those tall tales, but sometimes she just screamed at me and Duo Duo and Papa for no reason. What's more, she forgot those bad situations quite fast. One minute she was screaming at me, the next minute she could play with me laughing loud. She was pride of this, saying it's the art of "forgive and forget".
Grandma told me never to scream like Mama, "That's terrible!"she said. Grandma thought a fine lady should be elegant. Beauty is nothing when it comes to elegance. When eating, no sound could be made. When standing, I could never open my legs. When sitting, I should never shake my legs. Even when sleeping, if I curled my back a little, grandma would say I was like a shrimp. I hated these rules, so did Mama. But it was much better for her, because she seldom stayed home with me and grandma. She always went to the beauty salon or the mall, sometimes ate with friends outside. Grandma never blamed her. Even on those times when we had dinner together, Mama just ate boiled vegetables, grandma just told me to eat more. Grandma knew it was Mama's father who supported this family during the difficult times for so long. And Mama had already made the great sacrifice to carry me to this world, so really, no blame could be put on her.
Still, grandma thought I must have been starving when I was in Mama's belly, so she kept letting me eat as much as I could. I never knew the feeling of hunger when I was a child. My home was always full of snacks, fruits, unfinished meals. I loved snacks and I never stopped eating them as long as I had nothing to do. I didn't understand why people should eat meals everyday. I never felt I need them. I had meals just because grandma ordered Duo Duo to chase after me with a spoon, saying" Come on, be a good girl, eat all this up so you will grow up big and tall." I didn't like to grow big and tall, Mama said I was already too fat. But I knew I had to eat them to make grandma happy.
Mama gave us a look of dislike when grandma was happy seeing me eating a lot of food. She used to talk to Papa about my amount of eating. Papa just said, "It's Ok. Don't worry. Ling Ling is just 5 years old, eating a bit more is not harmful to her growth." "A bit more?" Mama screamed, "Your Mama is dumping food into her as if she's a trash can!" "Sh..." Papa put one finger before his lips, "Ma is from the old days. You should understand her." Papa is a person who thinks "Xiao" or filial piety as the number one virtual of all. No matter how busy he was, he always tried to make some time to stay with my grand parents. When I was born, the factory Papa was working for was prosperous, but then it went bad day by day. Finally Papa lost his job when I was two years old. Our family was supported by my grandpa (on my mother's side) and his restaurant. Papa began to do some small business, working over 14 hours a day. Later he had a small factory of his own. Even on those hard days, Papa would have a walk with my grand parents once he had time.
Mama often screamed at us, while she never screamed to grandma. I bet it was not she did not want to, she just did not want to hear all those words Papa talked about devotion to parents. So she gave up the limitations on my amount of eating. However, there still were times when Papa was working outside, grandma and Duo Duo took grandpa to the hospital to do regular body checks, I was left to stay with Mama. She took me to the shopping mall or the beauty salon and gave me a cup of yoghurt for lunch.
"I want cookies, Mama."A cup of yoghurt was of course not enough for me.
"Look at you," Mama put her hands on my belly, "You look like a basketball. You still want to eat?"
I told this to grandma when we got home and was forced to have a big dinner. From then on, every time I was going to stay with Mama, grandma would put some snacks in my small backpack and told me "Don't let your Mama see".
Mama had tons of fashionable clothes, a lot of which she just put on once or twice. When her wardrobe could not hold the big pressure of so many things, Mama picked some dresses out and gave them to Duo Duo. Duo Duo loved them so much. She put them in her suitcase and only wear them on holidays. When she had time, she stood in front of the mirror and tried on the clothes again and again. For some pieces she was too big to put on, so she also joined Mama's Losing Weigh Party.
One day grandma saw Duo Duo trying on a ripped jeans, "You look like a beggar, Duo Duo," grandma pulled her face long, "Don't wear these in front of me and your grandpa. We don't like this." Grandma left grumbling "those clothes today..."
Fashion in grandma's days were Qipaos. I have seen grandma's photo wearing Qipao. It was so beautiful and elegant. Grandpa sat beside grandma smiling sweetly. Grandpa must like Qipao, but I was not sure if he liked clothes today, because he never had an expression on his face since I have a memory. Usually he just slept in bed. When he woke up, grandma and Duo Duo would put him into the wheel chair. He opened his eyes and stared somewhere in front of him, as if he was not a person but a human shape stuffed with cotton. Everyday grandma and Duo Duo would take grandpa in the wheelchair to have a walk outside. I was surely with them. Sometimes Papa would join us, too.
I was going to be six years old and should start to go to primary school. The school was just 15 minutes walk from my home. There was also a middle school nearby. Sometimes we walked there, watching students going to their evening classes.
"Grandma", Duo Duo asked, what do they learn in middle school?"
“Chinese, Math, English, Physics, Geography..."Grandma thought for a while but could not come up more, "Quite a few subjects."
Duo Duo knew from her sisters that there were Chinese and Math like in primary school, but she was surprised to know there were so much more subjects that she didn't understand even the name.
"Is English 'GOUDMAONING' and 'BAI BAI'?" Duo Duo imitated those people speaking in TV programs.
"Yes, grandma could teach you more if I still kept those old English books."
"I could learn from TV!" Duo Duo said excitedly. She loved watching TV, especially those TV series in which there were pretty city girls and boys fell in love. She said there was not a TV in her own home, people went to bed not long after the sunset.
Several days later grandma asked Duo Duo if she would like to go to vocational school, because her age for middle school is too old. "If you finish vocational school, you could be a teacher in your village, you could find a better husband." Grandma said, smiling. Grandma thought marriage was the most important thing for a woman, which was the same with Duo Duo's mother. But Duo Duo's mother was just a countryside woman who didn't know the importance of knowledge. My grandma knew. For her, knowledge was one of the most powerful tool to help a fine lady to find a good husband before marriage. And after marriage, it would become the most reliable resource a woman could use to give education to her children and to gain face to her husband. Grandma was a university of the 1940's when only the richest or smartest people could go to universities. She did not have a job all her life. She went to university just for a good marriage. Sometimes grandma said maybe she should listen to her father and just marry someone rich instead of going to university, if so, she may live in Tai Wan now, with her father and her sisters and brothers. She always kept the small black and white photo of her father.
Duo Duo smiled shyly, then she was so happy that she couldn't believe it, "But what about Ling Ling and grandpa, and the housework?"
"Ling Ling will go to school in several months. After that, there won't be too much work at home." Only seeing grandma's face would be enough to keep Duo Duo from worries, "You could go to school in the day time and helped me with grandpa. The school is not far."
Duo Duo was choked by happiness. Mama said, "Don't worry about money, Uncle will pay for you."
Duo Duo thanked all the people in the family.
Grandpa's situation was worse these days. He began to drop mouth water when we walked outside. Duo Duo had to take a small piece of cloth to clean the mouth water everyday as if she was taking care of a baby. More over, grandpa shited in pants for several times. The first time was near the end of last year, but recently it happened more often. Grandma cannot do the cleaning without help. Papa was not often at home. Mama decided she would start to run her own beauty salon, so she was busier than ever before. Duo Duo said she would help. I said I would help, too, because I thought it would be funny to see grandpa shit in pants like a baby. Grandma only told me it's too smelly and locked me in my room while she and Duo Duo did the cleaning.
I was not sure if Mama even knew all this. We could hardly see her at home. Sometimes she came back totally drunk, throwing up everywhere. Duo Duo was the only one to do the cleaning before Papa saw it. Mama thanked Duo Duo for doing this and gave her more clothes. Duo Duo put them in her suit case in precise order as if they were pure gold.
Finally I went to the primary school. Duo Duo still could not go yet. The man at the vocational school said Duo Duo was still too old for vocational school. Papa was too busy, so he let Mama to keep connected with the school to see if they could make some change to let Duo Duo in.
Soon the Mid-Autumn Day came. Grandma and Duo Duo bought a lot of food to celebrate it. Despite different kinds of moon cakes and fruits, they also bought my favourite ice cream and punch. Grandma asked Papa and Mama to come home earlier and have dinner together. Mama said she had no problem.
"Ma, I have an important celebration meeting with the employees in the afternoon". Papa said.
Grandma's face changed to sad immediately.
"All right, Ma, I will come home as early as possible."
Grandma was relieved. Later Mama asked Papa what was wrong with grandma, "I think it's fine," Papa said, "Maybe she thought about my grandpa. And you know, for old people, festivals are more important than for us." Mama nodded her head and said she was going to make a phone call to her parents.
I was the one who came back earliest. Seeing so many delicious food, I couldn't stop myself. I ran directly to the moon cakes. But grandma said I could not eat that yet. Moon cakes should be served only when every family member were all present.
"But you could eat other snacks." Grandma said with a comfort smile.
"Grandma," I asked while eating ice cream, "Why moon cakes are called 'Moon Cakes'"?
"Because they are round, just like the moon today. " Grandma went to the window to see if there was a moon outside. But the moon had not show up yet. "The moon on Mid-Autumn Day will be the roundest over the whole year. On this day, families should also get together. Papa, Mama, grandpa, grandma, and sisters, and brothers, all family members."
"Is Duo Duo our family member?"
"Yes, she's your sister."
"No, I'm not her sister. You said her sisters are in the countryside."
"She's not your real sister, but she is your sister, a good sister."
"Grandma, do you have real sisters?"
"Yes, I do."Grandma said, watching the photo of her father on the small frame lay on the fridge,"But I don't know where are they, or are they alive."
"Why?"
Duo Duo came in with my grandpa in the wheelchair. She put the brand new suit grandma bought recently on grandpa and grandma was so happy.
"Look at your grandpa!" Grandma yelled, "Duo Duo, thank you! How do you know I am going to dress him like this today?"
Duo Duo just smiled.
The four of us sat in the living room, waiting for Papa and Mama. Grandma and Duo Duo watch TV as well as talking, I was eating all the food I could eat, until grandma said, "Ling Ling, don't eat too much, we still have dinner after a while." Grandpa sat in his wheelchair, still with no expressions, only blinked once a while.
Cellphones were not common at that time, so we waited and waited. Neither of my parents came back. Grandpa had fell asleep in the wheelchair. I doubted if grandpa was sensible, because I could never fell asleep with nothing in my stomach. It was seven o'clock, still no signs that my parents would come home.
"If you are hungry, you can eat some snacks, but not too much." Grandma told me and Duo Duo.
"If you are hungry, you can eat some snacks, but not too much." Grandma told me and Duo Duo.
I took a bottle of punch out of the refrigerator. After several sips, my stomach began to hurt. First a little and then went worse. I cried loudly and turned over in bed, sweating and holding my stomach. Grandma was scared. She had never seen me like this. She asked Duo Duo to feed grandpa some moon cakes and then help her to take me to the hospital. Grandma grabbed money and health insurance card immediately. As grandma put my coat on me, Duo Duo was still feeding grandpa. "Hurry up, Duo Duo."Grandma said in a tense tone.
When grandma opened the door, we saw Mama stood outside, looking for her keys in her purse, obviously drunk.
"What happened?" Seeing us like this, Mama seemed woke up a lot from the alcohol.
"You still know to come back?" This was the first time I saw grandma loosing temper on Mama, "Look at your daughter! How suffer she is!"
Mama bent down her body and asked me, "Ling Ling, what's wrong with you?"
"My stomach aches." I said with tears on my face.
"What did you eat?" Mama saw the table full of snacks and dishes.
I told her all the things I ate.
"You must have had too much! Try to throw up some!" Mama put off my coat and led me to the toilet.
"Will that be useful?" Grandma asked, "Duo Duo and I were going to take her to the hospital."
"Ma, you never listen to me! " Mama looked grandma with vexation, "How many times I have said do not give her too much to eat! Duo Duo, you, too! No one ever listens to me. See what happens today!"
Neither grandma nor Duo Duo spoke, they just fixed their attention on me standing beside the toilet feeling impossible to throw up. Mama used a spoon to push down the back of my tongue to make me vomit, but it did not work. Mama pushed so hard that my tongue hurt, too. I cried harder. Grandma and Duo Duo stood outside of the washroom, watching all my suffering with a burning heart.
Suddenly Mama said, "Drink some wine, you must can throw up". So she asked Duo Duo to get some wine.
"What?" Grandma said, "No, no! Ling Ling cannot drink wine. She's only five years old. We'd better get her to the hospital."
"Why can't she?" Mama screamed, "Today is Mid-Autumn Day. The doctors and nurses went home early, so did taxi drivers. It will be hard even to find a taxi to go to the hospital." Mama stepped out of the washroom, passing by grandma and Duo Duo to get the wine. "Ling Ling is my daughter, I can drink so she can drink."
"No way!" Grandma's face became red, "You could never gave alcohol to Ling Ling. She will never be like you! Even the doctors and taxi drivers know they should go home earlier today. You, the mother of a five year old, stay outside drinking alcohol! You never care about your own child! You never care about this family!"
"Yes, you are right!" Mama stopped. Her eyes red with tears, "I never care about my own child. I never wanted her! It's you and your son who begged me to give birth to her!"
"How could you say this to me!" Grandma's eyes opened wide.
"I never cared about your family? Then I drink alcohol for who? " Mama crushed into the couch, "I don't know to come home earlier? It's the hell vocational school's dean who asked me for a drink. He said he wanted to talk about Duo Duo's admissions. He said nothing but kept me drinking, so that he could lay his hand on my hips!"
Grandma and Duo Duo stood there as if they were struck by the thunder. Mama's cry was painful and dry in the silence.
"Did you..." Grandma finally opened her trembling mouth after a few seconds.
"I said 'Fuck you' and ran off the bar." Mama said with a murderous sight.
Papa finally came back. Mama couldn't stop crying in the sofa. I stood by the toilet, whipping in a low volume. Grandma spoke before Papa opened his mouth, "Don't ask anything. Ling Ling is sick. It's all my fault."
Papa came to me and asked what was wrong with me. I told him I ate too much and couldn't throw up. Papa asked me to put on my coat, said he would take me to the hospital. He went over to Mama and asked gently what happened. But she just couldn't help crying. Papa sent her back to their room.
"Ma, don't worry," Papa said to grandma, "I'll take Ling Ling to the hospital. She'll be fine. You look tired. Better get something to eat."
"I'm not hungry. Just leave me alone."
"All right, Ma." Papa had some water, "I'm sorry I'm late today. How is Pa? Has he eaten anything? " Papa walked over to grandpa.
"Duo Duo just fed him some moon cakes."
"Pa!" Papa cried out.
Grandpa's face was contorted as if he was quite angry and sad. This was the first time I saw expressions on grandpa's face, also the last time. Gandma ran over here and blacken out. Mama also came out from her room, still crying.
I and my grand parents were sent to the hospital at the same time. Later I came out looking much healthier. Grandma came out looking much older. Grandpa came out only became a box of ashes. His death was caused by the moon cakes choked in his throat.
Several days later Duo Duo's parents came. They both dressed white and brought us bread made of various shapes in memory of the dead. They cried loudly in front grandpa's tablet.
When they took a rest in the dinning room, Duo Duo's Papa said to my Papa, "Don't be too sad. The Red Fortune (marriage) and the White Fortune (death) are for every family. No one can escape the White Fortune, but it's not a bad thing. "
"Yes, I know. Thank you, cousin." Papa was still in great sorrow.
Grandma came from the living room. "How are you, Aunt?" Duo Duo's Mama spoke to grandma.
"Much better." Grandma gave a shallow smile, "How are you and the kids?"
"I'm quite busy these days. The kids are good, especially Wei Wei. He did very well in school."
"That's great." Grandma said without too much expression.
"Ling Ling also went to school. What a good girl! "Duo Duo's Mama held me in her arms. "Aunt, actually this time we came for this. Now Ling Ling start schooling, so we think there are not too much to do in the house. Duo Duo is 21, we have found a good guy for her..."
"Ma," Duo Duo suddenly showed up, "I don't want to go home. I want to go to school!"
"You shut up!" Duo Duo's Papa stared at her, "No speaking when elder people are speaking!"
"But cousin, " Papa said, "Duo Duo wants to go to vocational school. I'll pay for her tuitions."
"Yes, Papa, please let me stay. I don't want to get married now." Duo Duo was almost with tears.
"How could you not get married? We've already accepted the gifts from the guy." Duo Duo's father was serious.
"It's old Wang's son, in the next village. Duo Duo, you used to play with him when you were children. You must remember him." Duo Duo's Mama seemed quite like this guy, "They are all good people. They gave us a TV! A colourful TV set! I have talked with your Papa we'll give this to you and your husband. We don't watch TV anyway..."
"Ma, I don't want to go." Duo Duo was on the edge of collapse.
"Say that again I'll tear up your mouth!" Duo Duo's Papa stood up with anger, " Look at how many troubles you have brought to your uncle! How could you still have face to stay here?"
Duo Duo cried silently.
"Don't say that," Mama passed by and heard their talking, then she said, "It's non of her business. Duo Duo is a good girl. "
"Duo Duo, maybe you should go home with your Papa."Grandma's words made everyone surprised, "You never know what will happen in the next minute. Try to stay with your parents and don't regret afterwards like me. Your Mama has a point. She found a good husband for you, and the school seemed a problem now."
Neither Papa and Mama spoke after grandma's words.
Duo Duo went home with her parents. We walked them to the bus station. Duo Duo's Papa walked in the font with Duo Duo's luggage. Duo Duo walked crying with her Mama. Duo Duo's mother took Duo Duo's hand and told her not to cry. Duo Duo's back figure seemed quite small and weak compared to her Mama.
About two years later, Duo Duo came our home with her husband. They took their twin babies, too. It's a Dragon-Phenix Twin, which means a boy and a girl. It was regarded as very good fortune for the family. Both the boy and the girl looked like their father, a strong and honest village man. It looked he and Duo Duo loved each other very much. Duo Duo was laughing all day. She made us laugh, too. Her accents changed back again. She tried to speak mandarin to us, only to find herself mixing up those accents in every word.
I believe she was more happy than she was in my home. Mama picked some clothes to give Duo Duo again, but she was already too fat to put on. "I'll give them to my sisters. Thank you so much, Aunt."
When we walked them to the bus station, some middle school students passed by. "I love their uniforms," Duo Duo said to her husband, "I wish our kids could put on those someday."
Her husband said something and they both laughed.
I walked behind them, seeing Duo Duo's back figure like her mother's more and more.
